The Health Properties of Indian Spices: What Research Suggests

Indian spices have been central to Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Modern research is now studying the bioactive compounds in these spices and their potential effects on health. Here is what current science suggests — with the important caveat that most studies use concentrated extracts rather than culinary quantities, and findings should be understood as promising rather than conclusive.

Turmeric (Haldi) — Studied for Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Turmeric contains curcumin, one of the most widely studied plant compounds in nutrition science.

What research suggests:

  • Curcumin has been studied as an inhibitor of NF-kB, a pathway involved in inflammatory gene expression (Aggarwal et al., 2007)
  • Antioxidant properties — curcumin may neutralise free radicals and support the body's own antioxidant enzymes
  • Some studies suggest potential neuroprotective effects; research into cognitive health is ongoing and not yet conclusive
  • May support liver function based on animal and in vitro studies; human evidence is limited

Traditional use: Add to curries and dals with black pepper (piperine increases curcumin absorption significantly — Shoba et al., 1998) and a fat source. Haldi doodh before bed is a traditional preparation.

3. Combine synergistically — black pepper with turmeric is the most evidence-backed combination. Black pepper + turmeric together is more effective than either alone.
