The Butter Board Trend, Elevated
The butter board went viral for good reason — it's generous, shareable, visually stunning, and endlessly customisable. Smear softened butter on a board, add toppings, serve with bread. Simple. But the versions that truly stop the scroll? They have a flavour story.
Phoran's Indian spiced butter board has that story in spades.
A Note from Our Founder
"In my childhood home, we always had spiced ghee on the table — ghee with ajwain, ghee with jeera, ghee with garlic and red chilli. We didn't call it a 'butter board.' We called it dinner. When I saw this trend explode online, I smiled. India has been doing compound spiced fats forever. We just never photographed it." — Founder, Phoran Masala
The Phoran Spiced Butter Board
This board uses three compound butters, each built around a different Phoran spice profile. Together they create a tasting experience that moves from warm and earthy to tangy and bright to smoky and bold.
Butter 1: Garam Masala & Honey Butter
- 100g softened unsalted butter
- 1 tsp Phoran Garam Masala
- 1 tbsp good honey
- Pinch of flaky salt
Mix together and smear in the centre of the board.
Butter 2: Chaat Masala & Lime Butter
- 100g softened unsalted butter
- 1.5 tsp Phoran Chaat Masala
- Zest of 1 lime
- 1 tsp lime juice
Mix and smear to one side of the board.
Butter 3: Kashmiri Chilli & Garlic Butter
- 100g softened unsalted butter
- 1 tsp Phoran Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
- 2 cloves roasted garlic, mashed
- Fresh coriander, finely chopped
Mix and smear on the other side.
How to Build the Board
- Use a wooden board or marble slab — both photograph beautifully.
- Smear each butter in a distinct section, leaving some texture and swirl.
- Top with pomegranate seeds, toasted cumin seeds, fresh herbs, and edible flowers if you have them.
- Serve with warm naan, sourdough, or pita.
- Photograph before anyone touches it.
Why This Works
Each butter hits a different part of the palate. The garam masala butter is warm and aromatic — perfect with honey. The chaat masala butter is tangy and bright — it wakes everything up. The Kashmiri chilli butter is smoky and bold without being aggressive. Together, they're a masterclass in Indian spice balance.
