The Auspicious First Sight

Vishu, the Malayalam New Year, is one of Kerala's most cherished festivals. Celebrated in mid-April, it begins with the sacred ritual of Vishukkani — the first sight of the new year. Before dawn, elders arrange an auspicious display of golden cucumbers, raw rice, coconuts, yellow konna flowers, a lit lamp, and coins. Children are led to this sight with eyes closed, opening them only when they stand before the arrangement — ensuring prosperity for the year ahead.

At Phoran, we celebrate Vishu by honouring Kerala's extraordinary spice heritage. Explore our Top Selling Masalas to bring Kerala's flavours home.

The Grand Vishu Sadhya

The Vishu feast — Sadhya — is a magnificent spread served on banana leaves, featuring over 20 dishes that balance every flavour: sweet, sour, bitter, spicy, and astringent. Key dishes include:

  • Avial — a medley of vegetables in coconut and turmeric, tempered with curry leaves
  • Olan — a delicate dish of ash gourd and coconut milk
  • Erissery — pumpkin and lentils with roasted coconut and Garam Masala
  • Payasam — a sweet rice pudding fragrant with Green Cardamom and saffron

Kerala's Spice Legacy

Kerala is the spice capital of India — the land that drew traders from across the world for centuries. The spices that define Vishu cooking include:

A Gift of Prosperity

Vishu is also a time of giving — elders gift Vishukkaineetam (money) to children and loved ones. This year, add a spice gift to your celebrations with our Festival Special Masala Gift Pack — a premium collection that brings Kerala's spice legacy to every kitchen.

New Year, New Flavours

Vishu is a reminder that every new year brings fresh opportunities — to cook new dishes, explore new flavours, and create new memories around the dining table.

Happy Vishu from Phoran. 🌺✨
