Our Quality Promise – The Phoran Commitment

The Phoran Quality Promise

Every spice brand claims quality. We want to show you exactly what ours means — in specific, verifiable terms. Not marketing language. Actual commitments.

1. We Know Where Every Spice Comes From

Generic spice brands buy from wholesale aggregators who blend spices from dozens of sources. You have no idea where your turmeric was grown, how it was processed, or how long it has been sitting in a warehouse.

At Phoran, every spice is sourced from a specific growing region:

  • Turmeric (Haldi) — Erode and Salem, Tamil Nadu. Naturally high curcumin content (3–5%). Why Erode turmeric is different →
  • Cardamom (Elaichi) — Idukki and Wayanad, Kerala. High-altitude growing conditions for exceptional aroma.
  • Cumin (Jeera) — Unjha, Gujarat. India’s premium cumin market, highest volatile oil content. Unjha jeera explained →
  • Cloves (Laung) — Kerala. Plump, high-oil-content buds. Clove quality guide →
  • Fennel (Saunf) — Gujarat and Rajasthan. Sweet, aromatic, high anethole content. Fennel guide →
  • Red Chillies — Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. Kashmiri variety for colour; Reshampatti for heat.
  • Coriander (Dhania) — Rajasthan. Clean, citrusy aroma from well-dried seeds.

We visit our sources. We know the farmers by name. We pay fair prices because good sourcing requires fair relationships.

2. No Artificial Colours, Fillers, or Adulterants

Spice adulteration is widespread in India. FSSAI studies have found adulteration in 20–40% of random market spice samples. Common adulterants include lead chromate in turmeric, Sudan dyes in chilli powder, rice flour and chalk powder in ground spices, and excess moisture added for weight.

Every Phoran product contains only what is listed on the label. No anti-caking agents. No artificial colours. No added salt. No fillers. No preservatives. What you see is what is in the packet.

3. Small-Batch Processing for Maximum Freshness

Spices lose their volatile oils — and therefore their flavour and aroma — over time. A spice that has been sitting in a warehouse for six months before reaching a supermarket shelf, and then sits on that shelf for another six months, has lost a significant portion of its potency.

We process in small batches and pack to order wherever possible. This means our products are fresher than large-volume alternatives. Freshness is not a marketing claim for us — it is the entire point.

4. Lab-Tested Purity

All Phoran products are tested for purity before dispatch. We test for common adulterants, moisture content, and volatile oil levels. Products that do not meet our standards are rejected — not discounted, not relabelled, rejected.

5. Honest Labelling

Our ingredient lists contain only what is in the packet. Our best-before dates are accurate. Our sourcing claims are verifiable. We do not use vague terms like “natural flavours” or “spice extracts” to obscure what is actually in our products.

6. Fair Farmer Relationships

We pay above-market prices to farmers who grow without synthetic pesticides and harvest at the right time. Good sourcing requires fair relationships — farmers who are paid fairly have the incentive to maintain quality. Farmers who are squeezed on price have the incentive to cut corners.
